My Review:

sinful-science-cover5OMG! I want to live in Sinful Louisiana! In this tiny southern town, Fortune Redding is a CIA operative in hiding. Every new person that comes to town could be there for after her or at the very least manage to blow her cover. Justin Lao has come to town to investigate the effects of the oil spill on local wildlife and unwitting uncovers a dark secret that runs deep through the town.

I had so much fun with this book. Gertie and Ida Belle are absolute classics. Fortune took a bit of time for me to warm up to, but the residents of this larger than life small town are certainly worth the price of admission. I admit the premise of the story kind of threw me, but Fortune’s highly analytical behavior and way of looking at things made it easier to accept. The humor throughout the story is infectious and even the science is kind of fun. I had no idea that my crossword puzzle staple, “Nutria” is a swamp rat. I suppose “Mayor” Celia will be happy to know that I intend to visit this charming place as often as I can. I also intend to catch up with Frankie Bow. You have to love a mystery that makes you laugh.

Goodreads Summary:  A graduate student from Hawaii comes to Sinful, Louisiana to finish his fieldwork. He’d planned to spend a peaceful few weeks studying swamp rats. Instead, he discovers something that leads to Sinful’s darkest secret.

Ida Belle needs some extra income to buy a new car. Justin Lao needs a place to stay while he collects data for his master’s thesis in Conservation Biology. Gertie is taking a creative writing class online, and Fortune is just planning to keep a low profile. The only excitement in Sinful is the annual Swamp Rat Festival, which Mayor-Elect Celia Arceneaux has re-branded as the Annual Sinful Nutria Jamboree.

But then Justin makes a discovery that some people would rather keep hidden, and summer in Sinful heats up quickly. Fortune has to decide who can be trusted, and who would go to any lengths to keep someone from talking.

About the Author:

Author Photo B squareLike Molly Barda, Frankie Bow teaches at a public university. Unlike her protagonist, she is blessed with delightful students, sane colleagues, a loving family, and a perfectly nice office chair. She believes that if life isn’t fair, at least it can be entertaining. In addition to writing murder mysteries, she publishes in scholarly journals under her real name. Her experience with academic publishing has taught her to take nothing personally.
