Title/Author: Off the Beadin’ Path by Janice Peacock
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Publisher: Vetrai Press
Date of publish: March 2017
Jax O’Connell and her friend Tessa have no idea what challenges await them when they head to the small town of Carthage to take a glass blowing class with Marco De Luca, a famous Italian glass artist. While Jax loves melting glass to make beads, she discovers that standing in front of the glass furnace’s inferno frightens her.
After the first night of class, Tessa sees a dead body through the water-streaked window of the studio. The next morning there’s no sign of Marco—dead or alive—and one of the studio owners is also missing. The local sheriff doesn’t take the disappearance seriously, so Jax and Tessa take matters into their own hands
Jax must face her fears to find the body, track down the clues, and uncover the killer—and do it all before another life is shattered
Well written, witty, and informative, OFF THE BEADIN’ PATH is an excellent and unpredictable mystery that will keep you in your seat until you have read the last word.

This is the third book of the Glass Bead Mystery, you can read it as standalone, but the characters are so real and the story intriguing and interesting that I am thinking about starting the series from the beginning!
The murder mystery will keep you guessing for a long time, and send you off in wrong directions more than once. I loved this book from beginning to end!
If you are looking for an hour or two of whodunit sizzle, Off The Beadin’ Path might be the book for you. Lifetime besties, Jax and Tessa are wonderful counterparts for each other. They know one another so well, the reader feels like a part of the relationship. This story will resonate with crafters. On one hand they will wish the classes they take could only offer so much excitement, while on the other hand they will be totally grateful that all they get out of a class is a new crafting skill. This book is full of colorful well written characters. It is easy to see why this series is so popular with readers.
This is the first book in the series that I have read, though I have also read the Valentine mini-mystery, “Be Still My Beading Heart.” I have to admit the back and forth between possible boyfriends gets a little old for my taste, (it is possible that knowing more back story would make me a little more sympathetic) and it could have been a little longer, as I finished it in less than 90 minutes. Still the little secrets and innuendos among friends and classmates makes this story fun to read and I really didn’t catch on to the killer until the end. Getting me to chase a red herring or three is always a plus for me. Jax and her friends are people I would choose to spend time with again.
Janice Peacock decided to write her first mystery novel after working in a glass studio full of colorful artists who didn’t always get along. They reminded her of the odd, and often humorous, characters in the murder mystery books she loved to read. Inspired by that experience, she combined her two passions and wrote High Strung: A Glass Bead Mystery, launching a new cozy mystery series featuring glass beadmaker Jax O’Connell.
When Janice isn’t writing about glass artists-turned-amateur-detectives, she makes glass beads using a torch, designs one-of-a-kind jewelry, and makes sculptures using hot glass. An award-winning artist, her work has been exhibited internationally and is in the permanent collections of the Corning Museum of Glass, the Glass Museum of Tacoma, WA, and in private collections worldwide.
Janice lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband, two cats, and twelve chickens. She has a studio full of beads…lots and lots of beads.
